
According to the French daily, creating blood in Dracula’s country could be a cliché. Still this has not stopped the team of Romanian researchers who created the artificial blood based on hemerythrin, a molecule carrying oxygen in the blood of certain marine worms.
The blood can be used for some cases of transfusions , the Romanian’s invention could save millions of lives.
One of the solutions to cope with blood donations decrease is the manufacturing of artificial blood, capable of performing the same functions as the fluid flowing through our veins.
The blood manufactured by the Romanian team based on hemerythrin seems to be effective. At least, according to preliminary tests performed on rodents and on human cord blood cells.
Researchers hope to achieve, in the upcoming years, clinical tests on humans. They estimate that this new product could meet the needs of blood for emergency situations.
Professor Radu Silaghi, who created this substance is convinced that in a few years, after obtaining all necessary permits, the substance will be used in hospitals.
