Minister of National Defence, Corneliu Dobritoiu, said Saturday, in Sibiu, at the start of the NATO Military Committee's session, that "in principle" Romania will start withdrawing troops from Afghanistan in the second half of next year, the calendar being under debate.

"Romania welcomes the decision of the Summit in Chicago for Afghan forces to assume security responsibilities starting 2014. Schedule is being discussed with our allies. Basically, we start withdrawing troops from Afghanistan in the second half of next year, and after 2014, in full agreement with the allies, on the "together we have walked in, together we walk out of Afghanistan" principle, to ensure a minimal presence in terms of training and mentorship of the Afghan security forces, "said Cornelius Dobritoiu.

He was speaking in Sibiu, where Saturday morning started NATO Military Committee Conference, attended by defense chiefs of the 28 NATO members and about 300 other officials.
