Lugoj mayor said they voted unanimously the draft resolution regarding the subsidization by one hundred percent of the public transportation by the municipality, so that those traveling by bus company Meridian, who provides transportation in the city would no longer have to buy tickets, being able to travel for free.
"For 23 years, nobody has done anything for the public transport in Lugoj. Until now, a journey (with the city bus) was 60 cents, but almost nobody used the public transport because there were no timetable s and no bus stops, and those who did use the bus transport, however, would deal with the driver and would not pay the fare. Now, we have purchased and installed ten bus stops, we will buy and additional five, we have set a timetable, routes, and buses are marked with the insignia of Lugoj Town Hall, " Francis Boldea said , according to Mediafax.
The mayor in Lugoj added that so far the public transport in Lugoj had been subsidized by 75%, an starting July 1 it will be subsidized 100% by the Local Council.
‘It is a first in Romania, for a Town Hall to provide free public transportation’, Boldea added.
The mayor said that the 100% subsidy of public transport requires a fiscal effort of 45,000 lei per month, money that has already been provided in the budget.
Lugoj is the second largest city in Timiş County, according to the latest census, it has over 46,000 inhabitants.
