A first in Romania: Free public transportation provided in a city in the country
Local  municipal  councilors in Lugoj, Timis county, voted at its meeting on Thursday,  for the introduction of  free public transportation  in the city beginning  July 1, the decision was a first in Romania, Mayor Francis Boldea announced.

Lugoj mayor said they  voted unanimously the  draft resolution  regarding the subsidization by one hundred percent of the  public transportation by the municipality, so that those traveling by bus company Meridian, who provides  transportation  in the city would no longer  have to buy tickets, being able to travel for  free.

"For 23 years, nobody has done anything for   the public  transport  in Lugoj. Until  now,  a journey (with the city bus) was  60 cents, but almost nobody  used the  public transport because there were  no timetable s and no bus stops, and those who did  use   the bus transport,  however,  would deal with  the driver and would   not pay the fare. Now, we have  purchased and installed ten bus stops, we will buy and additional five, we have set a  timetable, routes, and buses are marked with the insignia of Lugoj Town Hall, " Francis Boldea said , according to Mediafax.

The mayor in Lugoj added that so far the public transport in Lugoj had been subsidized by 75%, an starting July 1 it will be subsidized  100% by the Local  Council.

‘It is a first in Romania, for a Town Hall to provide free public transportation’, Boldea added.

The mayor said that the 100% subsidy of public transport requires a fiscal effort of 45,000 lei per month, money that  has already been  provided in the budget.

Lugoj  is the second largest city in Timiş County, according to the latest census, it has over 46,000 inhabitants.
