At the beginning of the meeting to which the press had access, the President praised the summit in Bucharest as a step forward compared to the ones in Budapest and Warsaw.
The head of state said he is convinced that the relations with China will be held within the legislative framework provided by the European Union.
"I’ve followed the summit’s proceedings and the development of the Romania-China bilateral relationship. I believe that compared to the summits in Budapest, Warsaw, the one in Bucharest is a step forward," the president said.
"I am convinced that the relations between Romania, China and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe will take place within the framework of European Union law," Basescu said.
The President reminded that Romania and China have had a "great traditional political relationship." "We have had an excellent traditional political relationship. We will never forget the position of the Chinese Government in 1968, nor the fact that China has always been a support for Romania, both in the UN Security Council and before any international organization.
After meeting with Traian Basescu the Beijing official will deliver a speech at the Parliament Palace and then meet with Crin Antonescu.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister of China will receive the Medal of Honor of the Senate.
Premier Li is on an official visit to Romania, attending the summit of the government leaders of the Central and Eastern Europe and China.
